That might be a good suggestion, also: just volunteer to help the manager of the farmers market. While working, you get the chance to talk to the vendors and find out about their community involvements.

Sumo: Try the Transition network. http://www.transitionus.org/stories/state-movement-transition-colorado

Meetup is not bad, either, but could be a wide range of groups.
Also look for local community awareness groups, perhaps talk to whoever runs the nearest farmers market.

I wish there was a community of folks (like the people here at FG) in my area that I could get to know, hopefully be accepted, and spend a lot of time with - learn from - support - fellowship, etc. They say to hang out with the people that emulate your desired behavior(s).

I bet there is a group locally here; Fort Collins Colorado is pretty progressive for biking lanes, buying locally, growing, etc.

Anyone have any advice - maybe try meetup.com?

Nobody is secure if their neighbor is hungry. Food smothers fears. While you're taking the weekend off, take a pie next door.
